October 29, 2014 Ribbon Protector/Inertia Guard
Last week I received a new product that is manufactured by UAV Bits called the Ribbon Protector/Inertia Guard. Their website says that it is designed to reinforce the gimbal motor area that normally separates in a crash.
It is quick to install and is held in place with rubber bands. At first I thought how can this stay together in a crash. On closer inspection, the rubber bands just stabilize the whole assembly and in a crash, how this is done would be immaterial.
OAV Bits uses the rubber bands also for quick removal so the camera guard can be installed when not flying. I was able to put the camera guard on quite easily without removing the Ribbon Protector. It slid all the way on except for the final 1/8 inch. If you use the rubber bands to install this product, I would suggest using two rubber bands just in case one should snap. Also I would replace them frequently due to the deterioration of the bands.
Due to the fact that I can have the Ribbon Protector and the camera guard installed at the same time, I used small zip ties to keep it in place. If I need to open up the gimbal motor cover for any adjustments, a quick snip of the tie and it comes right off.
I put this on my Phantom because a gimbal motor separated on it. I readjusted the horizontal on the gimbal shaft and have been testing it out. I plan to use Loctite 270 to secure the shaft when everything is perfect but in the mean time this product gives me peace of mind when flying. I hope I will not need it but if I do......
